Self mode

You're your own admin. Set up restrictions for yourself, lock them with a PIN you try to forget.

How Self mode works

Self mode is the simplest setup: one user (you) who is also the admin. You configure restrictions for yourself in a lucid moment, then rely on the PIN to stop you from bypassing them in a weak moment.

Setup flow

  1. Run through the first-run wizard, pick Self mode.
  2. Create your account with a PIN you'll try to forget (write it down somewhere you won't reach quickly).
  3. Add your first blocklist.
  4. Set one Downtime slot to test.

Why Self mode works

The technology doesn't do magic. What it does is introduce friction — the moment you want to bypass a block, you have to:

  • Remember your PIN (which you deliberately made hard)
  • Or wait for a Pause duration to expire

That gap of 30 seconds to 15 minutes is often enough for the craving to pass.

Tips for effective Self mode

1. Start small. Block 3–5 sites that actually burn your time — not everything.
2. Pair with Downtime. The hardest time for self-control is late evening. Schedule Downtime to cover that.
3. Review weekly. Check My Usage reports. If you're pausing 5x/week to get past a block, maybe it needs to be stricter or looser.
4. Don't memorise your PIN. The whole point is friction — write it somewhere physical, not on a sticky note next to your desk.
