How to split a PDF

Splitting a PDF or pulling out a few pages takes seconds, and everything happens right here in your browser:

  1. Add your PDF. Drag a PDF onto the drop zone above, or click Choose PDF to pick one. The tool reads it locally and shows the total page count.
  2. Pick a mode. Choose Extract pages to keep a selection like 1-3,5,8-10 as one new PDF, or Split into separate files to break the document into chunks (one page each by default).
  3. Run it. Click the button. Extract gives you a single PDF; split gives you a ZIP containing every output file.
  4. Done — privately. Your PDF was never uploaded. The whole operation ran on your own device.

Why split or extract PDF pages

Private and offline by design

Most online "split PDF" sites upload your document to their servers to process it. This one doesn't. It uses the open-source pdf-lib library to read and rebuild your PDF directly in your browser (and JSZip to bundle split files), so your file never leaves your device — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works. For heavier, repeatable jobs on Windows — editing the text inside a PDF, merging documents, running OCR on scans, or processing folders of files in bulk — try Kaizen OCR & PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Split PDF tool free?

Yes — completely free and unlimited, with no signup and no watermarks. It runs locally in your browser, so you can split or extract pages from as many PDFs as you like.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device and is never sent to any server, which keeps confidential documents fully private.

How do I extract specific pages from a PDF?

Choose the Extract pages mode and type the pages you want, such as 1-3,5,8-10. The tool builds one new PDF containing only those pages, in the order you list them, and downloads it.

Can I split a PDF into separate one-page files?

Yes. Choose Split into separate files and set pages per file to 1 to get one PDF per page. All the resulting files are bundled into a single ZIP for download.
