Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG is lossless, which is great for quality but heavy on kilobytes — a photo saved as PNG is routinely 5–10× larger than the same picture as JPG. Converting makes sense when the image is going somewhere size matters:

What happens to transparency?

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent PNG areas must become a solid colour. Most converters silently flatten to white; here you pick the fill colour before converting — white for documents, or match your page background so logos drop in seamlessly.

Choosing the right quality

QualityBest forTypical size vs PNG
0.90–0.95Photos you'll print or edit again~15–25%
0.80–0.90Web pages, email, social posts~8–15%
0.60–0.75Thumbnails, previews, drafts~4–8%

The size column is a rule of thumb for photographic images; flat graphics compress differently. Each converted file shows its exact before/after size, so adjust the slider and re-drop if you want a different trade-off.

When you should NOT convert to JPG

Keep PNG for screenshots full of text, logos, diagrams and UI mockups — JPG's compression smears sharp edges into visible halos, and re-saving loses a little more every time. If you just want smaller PNGs without changing format, use the Compress Image tool instead. Converting many formats in both directions? The general Image Converter handles PNG, JPG and WebP any way round, and JPG to PDF takes the result straight into a document. To pull text out of an image, run it through Image to Text (OCR).

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so some detail is discarded at every save. At quality 0.9 the difference is invisible for photos; text and sharp-edged graphics show artefacts sooner. Keep the PNG original if you might need to edit later.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG cannot store transparency, so those pixels are filled with a solid colour. This tool lets you choose the fill (default white) before converting, so a logo can be flattened onto the exact background colour of wherever it's going.

Can I convert many PNGs at once?

Yes — drop any number of files and each converts independently, then use Download all. Because conversion runs on your own device there's no per-file upload wait and no batch limit.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser using the HTML5 canvas — files never leave your device, and the page even works offline once loaded.

Why is my JPG sometimes larger than the PNG?

For flat graphics with few colours (icons, screenshots of text), PNG's lossless compression is extremely efficient and can beat JPG. The per-file size readout shows the change; if the JPG comes out bigger, the image was a poor JPG candidate — keep it as PNG.
