How to add page numbers to a PDF

Numbering the pages of a PDF takes seconds, and everything happens right here in your browser:

  1. Add your PDF. Drag a PDF onto the drop zone above, or click Choose PDF to pick one. The tool reads it locally and shows the total page count.
  2. Set your options. Choose the position (bottom or top, left/center/right), the starting number, the format (1, Page 1, or 1 of N), the font size and the margin from the edge.
  3. Add the numbers. Click Add page numbers. The tool stamps every page and downloads a new, numbered PDF — your original file is untouched and was never uploaded.

Why number PDF pages

Private and offline by design

Most online "add page numbers to PDF" sites upload your document to their servers to process it. This one doesn't. It uses the open-source pdf-lib library to read and rebuild your PDF directly in your browser, embedding a standard Helvetica font and drawing the page numbers on each page — so your file never leaves your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works. For heavier, repeatable jobs on Windows — editing the text inside a PDF, merging documents, running OCR on scans, or processing folders of files in bulk — try Kaizen OCR & PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Add Page Numbers to PDF tool free?

Yes — completely free and unlimited, with no signup and no watermarks. It runs locally in your browser, so you can number as many PDFs as you like.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device and is never sent to any server, which keeps confidential documents fully private.

Can I choose where the page numbers appear?

Yes. Pick any of six positions — bottom or top, aligned left, center or right — and set the margin from the edge. You can also choose the font size.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the Starting number to any value. The first page uses that number and each following page increases by one — handy when a document continues from an earlier file.

What number formats are supported?

Three formats: a plain number (1), a labelled number (Page 1), or position out of total (1 of N). The total in 1 of N reflects the actual page count of your PDF.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and it still works, because all processing happens in your browser with the open-source pdf-lib library.
