Why word and character counts matter

Many platforms have limits: meta descriptions sit around 155 characters, a tweet is 280, and many essays or assignments specify a word count. A quick, accurate count helps you stay within limits and gauge how long your content takes to read or narrate — handy for blog posts, video scripts, podcasts and social captions.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free?

Yes — completely free and unlimited, with no signup. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses about 200 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, a comfortable narration pace for voiceovers and presentations.

How are words and sentences counted?

Words are counted by splitting your text on runs of whitespace. Sentences come from groups of terminating punctuation (. ! ?), and paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by blank lines. These are sensible estimates that match how most tools count.
