How to Block Instagram

Block Instagram to reduce social media distractions. This guide covers complete blocking and time-limited access options.

Block Instagram Website

1. Open Focus settings (admin password required).
2. Go to Domain Management > Block List.
3. Click Add and enter the following domains:

instagram.com
cdninstagram.com
ig.me

1. Click Save.

This blocks the Instagram website, image CDN, and short links.

Block the Instagram PWA

If Instagram has been installed as a Progressive Web App through a browser:

1. Go to App Limits or App Groups
2. Locate the Instagram PWA in the application list
3. Block it or set a 0-minute time limit

Block in Parental Mode

The quickest method for parents:

1. Navigate to Parental > [Child's Name] > Category Filtering
2. Block the Social Media category
3. Instagram is included in this category and will be blocked automatically

Time-Limited Access

To allow limited Instagram browsing:

1. Add instagram.com to the domain management with a time limit
2. Set the daily limit (e.g., 20 minutes)
3. Once the daily limit is reached, Instagram is blocked for the rest of the day

This approach acknowledges that some Instagram use may be acceptable (e.g., staying in touch with friends) while preventing hours of mindless scrolling.

Schedule-Based Blocking

Block Instagram during work or school hours only:

1. Add instagram.com to the block list
2. Set the schedule to active during your focus hours (e.g., 8 AM - 5 PM weekdays)
3. Instagram is accessible in the evenings and on weekends

Combine with Other Platforms

If you are blocking Instagram, consider also blocking other visual social platforms like TikTok and Pinterest. These platforms have similar engagement patterns and can substitute for each other when only one is blocked.

Using the Pre-Built Social Media List

For comprehensive social media blocking:

1. Go to Domain Management
2. Click Pre-Built Lists
3. Enable the Social Media list
4. This blocks Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, Snapchat, Pinterest, and more

Verifying the Block

After adding the block rules:

1. Open your browser and go to instagram.com
2. The Focus block page should appear
3. Also try ig.me links to confirm they are blocked
