Focus FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Focus.

General

What is Focus?

Focus is a Windows desktop application for managing screen time. It operates in three modes: Productivity Mode (manage your own usage), Employee Mode (monitor employees), and Parental Mode (set restrictions for children).

What operating systems are supported?

Windows 10 and later (64-bit). macOS and Linux are not currently supported.

Does Focus require an internet connection?

Focus works offline for most features including app tracking, website blocking, and time limits. An internet connection is needed for license activation, email reports, and software updates.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Download the trial from the Focus product page to evaluate the features before purchasing.

Modes

Can I switch between modes?

Yes. You can switch modes in Settings > Mode by entering the admin password. Switching modes changes the available features and interface.

Can I use multiple modes simultaneously?

No. Focus operates in one mode at a time. Choose the mode that best fits your primary use case.

Which mode should I choose?

  • Productivity Mode if you want to manage your own screen time and block your own distractions
  • Employee Mode if you manage employees and want to monitor their computer usage
  • Parental Mode if you want to protect your children and set age-appropriate restrictions

Website Blocking

Does Focus block websites in all browsers?

Yes. Focus operates at the system level, so website blocks apply to all browsers installed on the computer (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, etc.).

Can Focus block HTTPS (secure) websites?

Yes. Focus blocks websites regardless of whether they use HTTP or HTTPS.

Can my child bypass the blocks?

Focus is designed to be difficult to bypass. The admin password is required to change any settings, and the blocking operates at the system level. However, determined users with technical knowledge may find ways around any software-based blocking. For younger children, Focus provides strong protection.

Does Focus block websites on other devices?

No. Focus only manages the computer it is installed on. It does not affect phones, tablets, or other computers on the network.

Privacy and Security

Is my data sent to any server?

All monitoring data (usage logs, screenshots, activity records) is stored locally on the computer. The only data sent externally is email reports (if configured) and license activation.

Can employees see that they are being monitored?

This depends on your configuration. Focus can run visibly (with a system tray icon) or in stealth mode. Many organizations choose to inform employees about monitoring as a matter of policy.

Where are screenshots stored?

Screenshots are saved locally in the Focus application data folder. They are not uploaded to any cloud service.

Technical

Does Focus slow down my computer?

Focus is designed to use minimal system resources. Most users do not notice any performance impact. If screenshot capture is enabled at very frequent intervals, it may use slightly more disk I/O.

Can Focus be uninstalled without the admin password?

Focus is designed to resist unauthorized uninstallation. The admin password is typically required to remove the application. This prevents children or employees from simply uninstalling it.

Does Focus work with VPNs?

Focus operates at the system level and works with most VPN configurations. However, some VPN setups may affect website blocking. Test your specific configuration after installing Focus.
